My Top 10 Spring Break Reads

Updated: Mar 31, 2018

Spring Break is a great time to STOP DOING HOMEWORK and instead, read some really great books. A good Spring Break read will take you any where -- without having to pack your toothbrush or forget your retainer. I've done that.

Take a look at my Gallery of Top 10 Spring Break Reads and spring into reading!

10. HEAP HOUSE

by Edward Carey

Eerie and strange, this book has an interesting story similar to 'Miss Perigrine's.' If you like that book, you'll love this one. Let's get creepy, people.

9. THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICALS

by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

This entire series is really good and one of my favs. Although short, these books spin memorable stories that are really great. I wish I could jump right into the pages and experience one of these tales first-hand.

8. THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET by Pseudonymous Bosch

I would call this book a mystery with a touch of magic that anyone will enjoy. This is ALSO a series (surprise, surprise) and I thought some of the other books weren't as good as this one. Can my name be "Pseudonymous?"

7. THE LAND OF STORIES

by Chris Colfer

This series is interesting and complex, and sits along with A Tale Dark and Grimm in my mind (also, an awesome book.) I have a lot of friends who dig these books -- and if you've read one, then you already know why. I love the cover art; it's always a sneak peek into the story.

6. LIESL AND PO

by Lauren Oliver

One of the coolest magic stories ever, LIESL AND PO is my 'go to' ghost/magic story. I could read it over and over again. And I have.

5. MORBITO: GUARDIAN OF THE SPIRIT

by Nahoko Uehashi

A story about a warrior woman (oh, yeah!) in ancient Japan. Morbito is an action-packed fantasy novel you won't forget. #TimesUp

4. DEEP BLUE

by Jennifer Donnelly

The whole WATER FIRE saga is good but I think DEEP BLUE is the best. It's the mermaid book I have been searching for! #whodoesntwanttobeamermaid?

3. DOROTHY MUST DIE

by Danielle Page

An evil spin on the WIZARD OF OZ, a young girl, Amy, is stuck in an evil new Oz must train to become the wicked witch to kill Dorothy. Beware, there are swears in this book (ask a parent before reading; or just don't swear in school - you'll be fine.) The title is a little harsh, but it's totally appropriate for this twisted tale that will have you questioning everything you've thought of alleged hero, Dorothy.

2. THE SEARCH FOR WONDER LA

by Tony DiTerlizzi

OK, this is the 2nd book by Mr. Tony DiTerlizzi that's landed on my TOP 10 SPRING BREAK READS list! A thick book about a future of Earth -- but a weird one (weird Earth, weird future.) This book is EPIC; and I'm using all CAPS for a REASON.

1. THRONE OF GLASS

by Sarah J. Maas

This is just an awesome book. After I read it, I felt like I had super powers. I want to tell all grown ups who are searching for a book to buy for the YA or Middle School Reader in their life who wants to get started on a book series: This is the book; this is the series. Yes, it is a series, and I love that it is. Because each of these books is like a massive, chocolately slice of cake. DEVOUR IT.

It's the story of a female assassin, Celaena, released from prison to fight in an epic battle to be the King's champion... but instead she discovers a magical secret.
